Youth Minister Search

The First Presbyterian Church of Dutch Neck, Princeton Junction, NJ, is seeking a long term Youth Minster to  guide our congregation in its ministry with the youth of our congregation and community.  The part time position is for 20 hours per week with responsibilities for developing and leading a sustainable program for middle and high school youth and their families, with worship, fellowship, and educational opportunities that meet the variety of interests and needs of our youth.  We are looking for a person of faith, trained and experienced in youth ministry, who is able to share the joy and meaning that comes from one’s life of faith.

The Youth Minster will work with the Youth Ministry Committee, direct the Youth Fellowship Program, develop curriculum and share the teaching of Christian education for youth, assist with the Confirmation Class, and  regularly participate in congregational worship.

Job Description for 2010-2011

Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church

Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church, of West Windsor NJ, seeks to hire a part-time Youth Minister for the period July 2010 to June 2011. It is expected that this staff position will be retained after June 2011.

The Interim Pastor of Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church is Rev. Paul Rhebergen, who was called in November 2008. A search is being conducted for a new Pastor, who will likely be installed by by January 2011.

The Youth Minister shall lead the Church's Youth Ministry in consortium with the Youth Ministry Committee, working together to define and carry out the Church's ministry with and for youth in grades 6-12. The Youth Minister shall be accountable to the Session through its Personnel Committee, and under supervision of the Interim Pastor.

The job of Youth Minister is firmly based on communicating and understanding what interests the youth, in order to teach them and help them get closer with God and their faith. Being able to relate one’s own past experiences with that of the youth’s for purposes of learning, as well as personal advice is a plus. The Youth Minister should also be someone who is fun, gets people to laugh, is “down to earth,” and leads by example. They should be organized and be able to plan well. Two main goals of this job are to help strengthen faith in the youth and to allow them to have a good time during it.

The duties and responsibilities of the position shall include (but not be limited to) the following:

  1. Youth Fellowship for grades 6-12
    1. During the period July 2010 – August 2010
      1. Meet with the Youth Committee to develop a summer schedule.
      2. Schedule and organize three youth activities, two of which are mission activities and one of which is a fellowship activity.
    2. During the period September 2010 – June 2011 (No Fellowship activities are expected during the month of December 2010 and the three weekends leading up to, and including, Easter 2011.)
      1. Provide students with education and activities through developing and teaching weekly devotionals during fellowship as well as other bible study opportunities.  Devotionals will focus on promoting a closer relationship with God, a better understanding of scripture, and social awareness of the injustices in the world and our responses to it.
      2. Schedule and organize youth activities, fellowship, outings, and retreats.
      3. Invite youth participation in the general worship life of the church.
      4. Lead high school students on monthly Crisis Ministry trips.
      5. Facilitate volunteers to assist with youth fellowship:  teachers, counselors, dinner providers, chaperones, etc.
      6. Provide a safe and secure environment that is comfortable for students as well as parents to discuss pertinent issues in their lives, struggles or any other matters.
      7. Communicate effectively through publishing: a monthly calendar, a monthly newsletter, a weekly bulletin insert, and other fliers to ensure that students and parents are up-to-date on all activities.  All communication will also go out via email and Facebook in addition to paper.
      8. Working with the Pastor to provide care and support for youth and their families, as well as others in times of crisis or as other needs develop.
      9. Hold at least a monthly volunteer meeting to check in with volunteers to hear feedback on the program as well as their ideas for how to make the program better.  Also, to provide volunteers with information so that they are aware of what is coming up in the future.
      10. For each point of contact, the Youth Minister will provide a report that includes (1) the date, (2) fellowship with Christian Education activity and (3) spiritual component or teaching moment with topic and or specific scripture used, a reflection on the interaction and response of the young people.
      11. Hold a bi-annual parents meeting.
      12. To structure a program that will continue beyond the extent of this contract.

  1. Christian Education
    1. To research and implement a curriculum that will be nourishing to our students, promoting a closer relationship with God, a better understanding of scripture, and social awareness.
    2. Provide a safe and secure environment that is comfortable for students as well as parents to discuss pertinent issues in their lives, struggles or any other matters.
    3. Facilitate volunteer teachers.
    4. Ensure that teachers are receiving the spiritual nourishment that they require as well, through bible study or other offering outside of the middle and Sr. high school Sunday school time.
    5. Hold a monthly meeting, more if necessary, with volunteers to check in and see how their groups are doing.  This will be a time of also hearing ideas to make the program better.
    6. Communicate what is happening in Christian education via the monthly calendar, bulletin updates, email, Facebook monthly newsletter etc.
    7. To structure and staff a program that will continue beyond the extent of this contract.

  1. Confirmation
    1. Assist the Pastor with teaching and preparing our students to be confirmed in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A)
    2. Take students on confirmation retreats.
    3. Provide a safe and secure environment that is comfortable for students as well as parents to discuss pertinent issues in their lives, struggles or any other matters.

    IV.     Worship
    a.  Assist in leading Sunday morning worship on a regular, scheduled basis.
    b.  Preach at least 2 times in Sunday morning worship
                c.  Assist the Worship Committee and the Interim Pastor in planning worship  

that will engage youth, and that will include youth according to their gifts,

interests, and abilities.

This contact shall be governed by the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church, (USA), and the Laws of the State of New Jersey.

Either Party upon 8 Sundays written notice may terminate this contract.

The terms and conditions of this contract shall be amendable only in writing and with the agreement of both parties.

The Youth Ministry Committee, with representation from the Personnel Committee, shall conduct an evaluation of, and report to the Session on the work of the Youth Minister in January, 2011, and before the end of the contract.

The Youth Minister shall fulfill the above responsibilities on a part-time basis averaging 20 hours per week during the school year, for the period commencing on July 1st, 2010 and ending on June 30th, 2011.  For these services he will be compensated $16,000, prorated over the course of the contract.

Furthermore, the Youth Minister will have an expense account of $2,000 for the period.  He will be reimbursed mileage at the rate of $.55 per mile and for expenses related to his ministry as Youth minister, to be paid by voucher.
